Congratulations to Erere OTROFANOWEI and colleagues for this important multi-country study on the accessibility and affordability of emollients for atopic dermatitis in Africa, now published in Journal of Investigative Dermatology.
Their survey across 16 mostly Sub-Saharan African countries highlights a crucial but often overlooked reality: even basic moisturizers—the foundation of atopic dermatitis management—remain financially out of reach for many patients.
Evidence such as this was instrumental in supporting the inclusion of low-cost, high-quality emollients (urea- and glycerol-based) in the 2025 WHO Essential Medicines List, an important step toward improving global access to fundamental skin care for people living with atopic dermatitis.
This work illustrates how clinical data from the field can directly inform global health policy. Congratulations again to the authors and the African dermatology community for bringing these critical access issues to the international stage.
